II. Comprehensive Research Methods Examination

Students must pass a 2 hour Research Comprehensive exam given twice a year, in September/October and in January/February. The exam is taken when the student completes the second year of research courses.

III. The IRB and Human Subjects Participation

Students should carefully read CSWI’s IRB Manual. No dissertation proposal can be approved without first receiving CSWI’s IRB approval. No research on human subjects can be done without approval from CSWI’s IRB. Students must follow the CSWI IRB manual.

Each IRB review request should address the following six areas:

1. Value of Research Project
2. Credentials of Investigator or Supervision Plan for Student
3. Risk/Benefit
4. Selection of Subjects
5. Informed Consent/Assent
6. Use of Data

Appendices should include copies of all tests, questionnaires, inventories, consent/assent forms, and letters to participants.

IV. The Dissertation

It is expected that students in their third year will begin writing a dissertation proposal. Students often change topics as they discover the difficulties in a particular topic.

Students are encouraged to work with their advisor or other faculty member as they develop their initial thoughts on a topic. The third year research seminar course is an ideal avenue for students to test their ideas and develop them into a draft proposal.

Students are encouraged to develop their ideas under the guidance of a faculty member and the Research Chair.
